PGT Door Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

PGT door installation in Los Angeles typically runs $850 to $2,400 installed, depending on the door line, glass package, and what the existing opening needs. We stock PGT-compatible hardware and panels on our trucks, so most single-door swaps are done in one visit. The way most owners discover they need us: a slider starts dragging, a French door won’t latch square, or an impact-rated panel starts leaking at the corner after a heavy Santa Ana rain.

PGT builds doors differently than the big-box stock stuff, and that is exactly why the install matters as much as the door itself. A panel that is square in the factory can rack out in a Los Angeles opening that has settled a quarter inch over twenty years. We measure the rough opening, shim to spec, and seal the flange so you are not redoing the stucco or drywall a season later.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

We install the full range of PGT door products: the WinGuard impact-rated hinged and sliding lines, the ClassicVue Max sliding glass doors, the 5000 and 7700 series aluminum doors, and the PGT 2500/4500 series hinged patio units. Most Los Angeles homes built since the early 2000s with PGT products have either a WinGuard slider or a 2500 series swing door. The label tells you. Open the door and look at the hinge-side edge or the top rail: there is a silver or white AAMA label etched with the series number, glass type, and manufacturing date code.

Compatibility gotcha: a WinGuard panel is not interchangeable with a ClassicVue Max frame, even when the nominal size (say, 72×80) matches. PGT mills the frame extrusions and weatherstripping profiles differently by series, and the locking hardware mounts are offset by design. We match by the label first, then verify dimensions with a digital caliper before we order or pull from stock. Aftermarket glazing beads and rollers are fine for most jobs; aftermarket lock stiles and hinge reinforcements are not, and we will tell you that before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing

  • The door drags or scrapes at the latch side. The slab has dropped, usually because the hinge screws have lost bite in an older wood jamb or the slab itself has settled. The longer it rubs, the more it chews up the sill cap and the weatherseal.
  • You can see daylight or feel air at the corners. The compression seal or the corner gaskets have flattened, and the panel no longer seats evenly. In a wind-driven Los Angeles rain, this is the leak that finds the drywall first.
  • The lock throws but the door still moves. The strike plate has slipped or the door has racked, so the latch isn’t dead-latching. That is a security problem today, not next month.
  • The panel is fogged between the glass panes. The sealed insulating unit has failed. On PGT doors the IGU is an integrated component; you replace the glass or the door, not the “fog” itself.
  • The frame flexes when you push the corner of the panel. The rough opening was never shimmed right to begin with, or the original install missed a fastening point. The door itself may be fine; the installation is what failed.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles, we quote most PGT door replacements this way: a standard 72×80 sliding door in the 2500 series runs $900 to $1,300 installed. WinGuard impact-rated sliders start around $1,600 and land anywhere up to $2,400 for larger or multi-panel openings with upgraded glass. A hinged 36×80 patio door runs $850 to $1,500 depending on glass and hardware.

That price includes removal and haul-off of the old panel or frame, new shims, mounting hardware, all weathersealing, and the trim work needed to leave the opening finished both sides. Written line-item price before we start. No change orders at the door. If the installation fails within 365 days, we come back at no charge under the Done Right Promise. No labor exclusions, no fine print.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the label, measure the panel width and height, and take a photo of the threshold and the hinge side before you call. That information gets you an accurate quote over the phone. What you should not do is try to pull a PGT sliding door out of its track alone. A WinGuard panel can weigh 200 pounds or more depending on glass, and a partial pull is how frames get score marks, sills get bent, and fingers get crushed.

Hinged doors are less dangerous but more fiddly: if the reveal is not consistent top-to-bottom, the door will bind within a season no matter how good the hinges are. We fix more DIY attempts in the San Fernando Valley and the Palms area than we care to count, usually by pulling the panel, re-shimming the rough opening, and re-hanging from scratch. Call (817) 686-2228 and we will give you a real price over the phone.
