CGI Window Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
CGI window installation in Los Angeles typically runs $850 to $1,900 per window installed, depending on the frame series and whether we’re replacing a single sash or a full-frame unit. We stock CGI-compatible hardware and glass packages on our trucks, so most single-window jobs are completed the same day we arrive. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover a failing CGI window during the first heavy rain of the season, when water shows up on the interior sill, or when a coastal breeze starts whistling through a seal that looked fine all summer.
CGI builds impact-rated windows designed for hurricane zones, which means their frames run heavier than standard residential windows. The glass-to-frame tolerances are tighter, the hardware is reinforced, and the sealing system is engineered as a single unit. When one component fails, the fix needs to match that engineering exactly, not just be close enough.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
We install and service the CGI product lines most common in Los Angeles homes: the Estate Collection, the Targa series, and the Sentinel series. Each uses distinct frame extrusions and hardware sets. The Estate and Targa lines run a flush-mount design with concealed hinges on casements and awnings. The Sentinel line uses a heavier frame profile originally built for commercial wind-load ratings, and it appears on a surprising number of hillside and canyon homes where coastal gusts are a real factor.
Finding your exact model takes thirty seconds. Open the sash and look at the extrusion on the hinge side or the top track. CGI stamps a series code there, usually two to four characters, starting with E (Estate), T (Targa), or S (Sentinel). If the label is painted over or worn, measure the visible-glass width and the frame depth. A Targa single-hung is not interchangeable with an Estate single-hung, even when the rough opening is identical. We have seen homeowners order a replacement sash online, get the series wrong by one letter, and end up with a unit that won’t seat in the frame. That’s the compatibility gotcha that costs people real money.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for CGI specifically: we install OEM CGI parts whenever the window is still under the manufacturer’s structural warranty. When it isn’t, we use aftermarket hardware and glass assemblies from suppliers we have vetted for dimensional matching. The last five years we’ve trended toward OEM glass packages even out of warranty, because the laminated interlayer in impact glass is specific to CGI’s wind-load testing. An aftermarket insulated-glass unit might fit, but it won’t carry the same impact rating.
Meridian Windows & Doors is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with CGI or its parent company, but we are authorized to install and replace their products, along with PGT, CWS, ES Windows, and the rest of our manufacturer lines.
Signs Your CGI Window Installation Is Failing
- Water staining at the lower corners of the sill. CGI frames drain through internal weep channels, and once those channels clog with Los Angeles dust and dried leaf debris, water backs up and finds the interior. You’ll see it as a faint brown line on the drywall or trim below the window, not necessarily water pooling on the sill itself.
- Condensation between the glass panes. Impact-rated glazing is heavier and stiffer than standard dual-pane. When an edge seal fails, the argon or krypton fill escapes, and a fog appears between the panes that you can’t wipe off. In Los Angeles, this typically shows up first on west-facing windows where afternoon sun heats the frame unevenly.
- Casement or awning sash sag that catches the frame. CGI’s concealed hinges carry significantly more weight than standard residential hinges. When they wear, the sash drops a few millimeters, and you’ll feel increased resistance on the crank about halfway through the throw. Catching at the top corner is the tell we look for.
- Weatherstripping that pulls loose along the meeting rail. Impact-rated frames flex less than standard frames, which means the adhesive on the weatherstripping takes the full brunt of that flex at the joints. Once it separates, you’ll feel a draft even when the sash is locked, especially in older homes near Topanga or the Sepulveda Pass where wind funnels through stronger.
- Lock failure and audible rattling in the wind. The multi-point locking rails on a Sentinel or Targa take repeated compression cycles as the frame heats and cools through Los Angeles’s hot-dry, cool-damp swings. When a lock point fails, the sash seals imperfectly, and you’ll hear a rattle during Santa Ana winds that a properly seated sash would never make.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the straight pricing picture for Los Angeles:
- Full-frame CGI replacement, Estate or Targa series: $1,200 to $1,900 per window installed.
- Sash-only replacement (single sash, same frame): $850 to $1,150 per sash installed.
- Hardware-only repair (hinge set, lock rail, crank assembly): $150 to $350 per window, parts and labor.
- Glass-pack replacement, impact-laminated, on an existing operable sash: $400 to $700 per unit.
The range depends on two things: dimensions and frame condition. Windows over 48 inches in width need thicker glass, which changes material costs. Frames that have been painted over multiple times take longer to prep correctly, and we won’t shortcut that, because a flashy new sash in a failing frame is a callback waiting to happen. Every price is written on paper before work starts, and it does not move at the door. The written 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the full installation. If it fails within that period, we come back at no charge, second visit included.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do three things before calling us. First, clear the weep channels with a stiff brush or a can of compressed air, not a wire hanger. Second, inspect the weatherstripping at the meeting rail and note where the adhesive has separated. Third, write down the series code from the hinge-side label so the phone call gives us real information. That’s it. Impact-rated sashes are heavy, the glazing is under significant compression, and a dropped Estate sash will crack a tile floor or break a toe. Removing the sash requires disengaging the hinge mechanism under tension, and if that spring clip releases wrong, you are looking at a trip to urgent care. Measure it right, seal it tight, and the door does the rest. Same rule applies to windows. If the job is beyond the weep channels, call us at (817) 686-2228 and we’ll put an exact price on it before anyone picks up a screwdriver.
FAQs
A properly installed CGI window in Los Angeles typically lasts 18 to 25 years before glazing seals or hardware reach the end of their service life. The bigger variable here isn’t the window itself; it’s sun exposure and air quality. Coastal salt air accelerates frame corrosion on south- and west-facing elevations in Venice and Playa del Rey, while valley heat puts more stress on edge seals in Northridge and Woodland Hills. Impact-rated frames generally outlast their hardware, so expect a hinge or lock repair around year 12 to 15 even if the glass is still solid. Call (817) 686-2228 and we’ll tell you if your window is aging normally or if it’s a candidate for early replacement.
Yes, if the frame extrusion and the glazing are intact. We repair hardware, weatherstripping, and weep systems routinely, and those fixes typically cost $150 to $350. If the glass-pack edge seal has failed and you’re seeing interior fog, replacement of the insulated glass unit is the only durable fix, and that runs $400 to $700. Full-frame replacement is warranted only when the frame itself is corroded, the rough opening has shifted, or a prior install was done poorly enough that the frame is no longer square. Call (817) 686-2228 for an exact assessment; estimates are free.
A single sash swap or glass-pack replacement takes one to two hours on site, with most of that time spent on sealing and cleanup. A full-frame replacement runs four to six hours per window when we’re pulling the old frame, correcting the rough opening, setting the new unit, and flashing the exterior. We stage installations for full-house jobs over consecutive days, but a one-window repair is a same-day job for a Los Angeles homeowner in almost every case. Call (817) 686-2228 and we’ll give you a written time estimate along with the price.
We stock hardware kits, weatherstripping sets, lock rails, hinge assemblies, and common glass-pack sizes for the Estate, Targa, and Sentinel series on our service trucks. Unusual frame sizes or custom-tinted glazing may require a three-to-five-day order from our Los Angeles supplier. We’ll tell you before we schedule the visit whether your part is on the truck or on order, so there are no surprised driveways and no open holes in your wall. Call (817) 686-2228 and we’ll check inventory while you’re on the line.
