PGT Impact Garage Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install PGT-compatible impact garage door parts across Los Angeles, with most full door replacements running $2,800 to $6,400 installed depending on size, series, and wind-load rating. Most part swaps can be scheduled within a few business days, and we carry common rollers, hinges, bottom seals, and reinforcement struts on the truck. Owners usually find us the day they hear a metallic snap, see daylight through a cracked panel, or notice the door shudders when the Santa Anas kick up against the canyon side.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT’s impact garage door line in Southern California is built around three series you’ll see most often: the 2200, 2500, and 3600. The 2200 is the entry-level impact-rated door, the 2500 adds a heavier frame and wider stile profile, and the 3600 is the hurricane-rated workhorse spec’d for coastal and hillside exposure. The part numbers matter here. A hinge for a 2200 will not carry the load on a 3600, and mounting hole spacing differs between series. Check the label on the interior face of the door panel or the vertical track brackets. You’re looking for a serial number and a series code, usually stamped on a silver or white sticker. If the sticker is gone, measure the stile width and panel thickness, and we can match it from there.
For OEM versus aftermarket: PGT’s OEM rollers, hinges, and struts are made to their exact extrusion profiles, and on a wind-rated door that matters. We run OEM when the door is still under PGT’s structural warranty or when the part affects the door’s wind-load path. For cosmetic trim, weatherstripping, and bottom seals, quality aftermarket equivalents from CWS or CGI stock often match or exceed OEM spec at a better number. We keep those in the truck. Meridian Windows & Doors is an independent service provider, not a PGT affiliate or warranty center. That means we tell you straight when OEM is required and when an equivalent gets the job done.
Signs Your PGT Impact Garage Door Is Failing
- Loud snap followed by the door dropping to one side. This is a torsion spring failure, the most common PGT garage door failure in Los Angeles. The temperature swings and salt air closer to the coast shorten spring life. The door is now carrying unbalanced weight, and running the opener will burn the motor out fast.
- Door shudders or binds mid-travel. Impact-rated doors are heavier than standard doors. When a roller bushing wears or a track gets knocked out of alignment, the extra mass shows up as vibration and binding. You’ll feel it before you hear it.
- Visible daylight under a closed door or at the panel joints. The bottom seal or astragal has compressed, cracked, or pulled loose. On an impact door, this seal is also part of the wind-driven rain defense. A gap at the bottom means water and wind are getting under the door, and in a Los Angeles winter rain that ends up on your garage floor.
- Cracked or delaminating panel skin. The aluminum or fiberglass skin takes direct hits from lawn equipment, balls, and the occasional car bumper. Once the skin cracks, moisture gets into the insulation core and the panel loses its impact rating at that point.
- Opener strains and the door stalls halfway. Often misdiagnosed as an opener problem. If the door runs smooth by hand with the release pulled, the opener is fine and the springs or rollers are the issue. If it binds by hand, the track or hinge is the problem. Either way, continuing to run the opener makes the repair more expensive.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what PGT impact garage door work actually costs in Los Angeles right now:
| Part / Job | Typical Installed Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Torsion spring pair | $380 – $620 | Matched to door weight; includes balancing and opener recalibration |
| Bottom seal / astragal | $120 – $240 | Material plus full-width fitment; seal type matters for wind-driven rain |
| Roller set (10 – 12 rollers) | $180 – $320 | Nylon or steel depending on track profile and door weight |
| Reinforcement strut | $90 – $220 each | Required on wider doors to keep wind-load rating |
| Full PGT impact door, standard 16×7 | $2,800 – $4,600 | Depends on series and wind-load rating |
| Full door, 16×8+ or custom wind zone | $4,200 – $6,400 | High wind zone hardware and heavier gauge track |
The range on full doors swings on two things: the wind zone your home sits in and the door size. A 16×7 door in a standard LA inland zone costs less than the same door in a coastal or hillside wind zone because the hardware and bracing specs change. Every quote we write includes the part, the labor, the haul-away, and the balancing and opener recalibration after install. The price goes on paper before we start, and it does not move at the door. Work is covered under our written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something fails in the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Let’s be direct about the torsion spring first. A PGT impact door carries a spring under enough tension to take fingers, an eye, or worse if it lets go. This is not a weekend project. We do not give instructions for torsion spring work, and no responsible contractor will. If the spring snapped, call us or another qualified garage door tech. Do not pull the red release cord and try to lift the door by hand; you’re now lifting an unbalanced 200-plus-pound panel with a compromised cable system.
What you can safely check: the bottom seal for cracks, the roller condition you can see at eye level, and whether the tracks look straight and tight to the wall. If the issue is a worn seal or a visibly failing roller, replacing those is straightforward for an experienced hand. The problem most LA homeowners run into is that the first replacement part they buy online is dimensionally wrong for their specific PGT series. If you want it matched right the first time, call us at (817) 686-2228 and describe the label off the door. We’ll tell you what it is, what it should cost, and whether a truck roll even makes sense.
FAQs
A PGT impact-rated garage door installed in the LA basin typically lasts 15 to 22 years, with springs and rollers as wear items that get replaced every 7 to 10 years depending on cycle count. Coastal homes shorten that range because salt air corrodes hardware faster than inland areas. An annual inspection and keeping the tracks clean adds real years to the system.
Rollers, hinges, bottom seals, and struts are replaceable parts, and most are swapped in under an hour if the door series is correctly identified. Springs are always replaced in pairs, not repaired, because a single new spring on an older pair creates an uneven load and snaps again sooner. Panels with structural cracks cannot be reliably repaired because the impact rating is lost at the crack line.
Most single-part replacements, including springs, roller sets, and bottom seals, take 60 to 90 minutes on site. A full door replacement is a half-day job. We schedule a specific window, show up when we say, and the tech you meet is background-checked and in uniform.
We keep the common wear items in the truck: rollers, hinges, bottom seals, weatherstripping, and standard reinforcement struts for the 2200, 2500, and 3600 lines. Odd-sized panels, custom wind-zone hardware, and non-standard colors are ordered from PGT with a lead time we tell you before you commit. For parts from other lines we support, we also carry select CGI, CWS, and ES Windows components.
Measure it right, seal it tight, and the door does the rest.
