PGT Window Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
PGT window installation in Los Angeles typically runs $65 – $140 per window in labor when the opening is sound, with full window replacement landing between $950 and $2,400 installed depending on size, glass package, and frame condition. We stock PGT-compatible hardware, balances, and sash components on our trucks, so most single-window fixes are done in one visit. Most homeowners call us after a sash drops hard, a crank stops engaging, or a slider suddenly drags across the track like it’s grinding gravel. The window worked fine last season, and now it doesn’t. That is almost always a failed balance, a stripped operator, or a worn roller assembly, not a full window replacement.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
We install and service PGT’s residential lines most commonly seen across Los Angeles: the 400 Series, 700 Series, WinGuard impact-rated units, and the older Eze-Breeze and SpectraGuard lines that were popular in the early 2000s. The right part depends on the series and the window’s size code, which PGT stamps on a label in the top jamb or on the sash corner. The compatibility gotcha: PGT has used three different balance shoe profiles across its vinyl single-hung and double-hung lines over the past 20 years. A 2009 400 Series balance will not seat in a 2019 400 Series frame, even though the window looks identical. We match the shoe, the weight rating, and the tube length before anything gets ordered. For most homeowners, OEM hardware is the right call because PGT’s tolerances are tight and the warranty on the work holds better. We will recommend an aftermarket equivalent only when an OEM part has been discontinued and we have a proven replacement we have installed for at least a year without callbacks. Meridian Windows & Doors is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with PGT, but we install and service their products every week.
Signs Your PGT Window Installation Is Failing
- The sash drops when you raise it. That is a failed balance system. The spiral or block-and-tackle balance is no longer holding the sash weight, which means the springs inside the tube have fatigued or the shoe has stripped.
- The crank turns but the window barely moves. The operator’s drive gear is stripped, or the arm has popped off the track. You will hear a grinding or slipping sound when you turn the handle, and the sash will sit crooked in the opening.
- A sliding window drags or sticks. The roller assemblies are shot. LA dust and the marine air closer to the coast chew through nylon rollers faster than people expect. A heavy sash will then ride on the track itself and score the aluminum.
- Water beads up on the sill or the interior wall after rain. The weatherstripping has compressed, or the sill drain holes are blocked with dust and debris. A window that leaks is not a window; it’s a drywall repair waiting for the next winter storm.
- You feel a draft even when the sash is closed and locked. The interlock is no longer seating, or the frame has shifted slightly. We see this a lot in older wood-frame houses in the Valley where the rough opening has settled over 30 or 40 years.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Most single-window hardware repairs in Los Angeles run $180 – $340 installed, including the part and the labor. Full PGT window replacement runs $950 – $2,400 per window installed, with impact-rated WinGuard units at the top of that range. The range is driven by glass package, size, access (second-story or over a hedge adds labor), and whether the existing frame is worth keeping. If the frame is sound, we replace the sash and hardware and you save real money. If the frame has rot or the rough opening has moved, a full replacement makes more sense.
Every quote is written down before work starts and the price does not move at the door. The labor is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if our install fails within a year, the return visit is free. The part carries PGT’s manufacturer warranty when we install OEM components.
DIY or Call Us?
You can clean the track and the sill drains yourself. That fixes more sluggish sliders than people expect, and it costs nothing but ten minutes with a vacuum and a rag. Here is where DIY goes wrong: window balances are under tension. A block-and-tackle balance can be released safely if you know the procedure, but if you release a spiral balance incorrectly, the tube can spin out and take a finger or an eye with it. We recommend a trained professional for any balance replacement, and for any sash removal on a second-story window. Elliot Vance has seen too many homeowners on a ladder with a pry bar who did not know the sash was still locked into the jamb. That is an emergency room visit dressed up as a weekend project. If you are not certain which part you have, send us a photo of the window label and the failing hardware. We’ll tell you what it is and what it costs. Call (817) 686-2228 and we’ll get you an exact quote, written down, before anyone picks up a tool.
FAQs
Balances and rollers typically last 10 – 15 years in LA’s climate, though houses within a few miles of the coast see faster wear because salt air accelerates corrosion on metal components. UV exposure from our relentless sun shortens the life of weatherstripping to roughly 7 – 10 years. If your PGT windows are older than 15 years and two or more sashes are failing, it is often cheaper per window to replace the group than to chase individual repairs.
Most failed hardware is replaced, not repaired. A stripped spiral balance, a worn operator gear, and a flattened roller are finished parts, not serviceable ones. The good news is the replacement is quick and the window is back to working like new. Call (817) 686-2228 for a written quote before you commit to anything.
Most single-window hardware replacements take 45 to 90 minutes once we are on site. A full window replacement typically runs half a day for a standard opening, including cleanup. We schedule a specific arrival window, not “sometime between 8 and 5.”
We stock the most common PGT balances, shoes, rollers, operators, and weatherstripping profiles on our trucks. For less common parts, we order OEM through our supplier network and schedule the install once the part lands, typically within a week. We tell you upfront whether your part is on the truck or needs ordering. No surprises.
