Drafty Windows Raising Energy Bills
What’s Happening
Drafty windows almost always mean the seal between the window unit and your home’s rough opening has failed, the weatherstripping has worn through, or the insulated glass unit itself has lost its gas fill. Any of those three conditions lets conditioned air out and outside air in, and your HVAC system pays the difference on every monthly bill.
It is rarely one dramatic failure. More often it is slow decay: a bead of caulk that dried and cracked over several winters, a foam gasket compressed flat after years of sash movement, or an argon-filled pane that lost its seal so gradually you only noticed when the heating bill jumped. The good news is that a trained eye can usually pinpoint the cause in a single visit, and most of these problems have a clear, permanent fix.
Why It Happens
Failed Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping is the foam, rubber, or pile seal that compresses when the sash closes and blocks the gap between moving parts. After years of opening and closing, heat, and UV exposure, it flattens, tears, or pulls away from the frame. The tell: run your hand along the inside edge of the closed sash on a windy day. If you feel a steady trickle of moving air, the weatherstripping is the likely culprit – especially if the draft tracks exactly where two surfaces meet.
Broken Insulated Glass Unit Seal
Double- and triple-pane windows trap an insulating gas, usually argon, between the panes. When the edge seal fails, that gas escapes and humid outdoor air takes its place. You will often see condensation or a permanent fog inside the glass before you feel the draft, but by the time the fogging is visible, the thermal performance of that unit has already dropped significantly. A failed IGU seal cannot be repaired by re-sealing the outside – the glass unit needs to be replaced.
Deteriorated Frame-to-Opening Caulk
The caulk line where the window frame meets the interior trim or the exterior siding is what keeps the rough-opening gap sealed. Standard latex caulk has a service life of roughly seven to ten years under normal conditions; silicone lasts longer but still cracks around frames that expand and contract with temperature. Look for visible gaps, flaking, or a caulk line that has pulled away from one surface. On a cold or windy day, hold a piece of tissue near the trim joint – movement in the tissue pinpoints an air path.
Window Frame Warping or Hardware Failure
Wood frames absorb moisture over time and can bow enough that the sash no longer sits flush in the frame. Vinyl and aluminum frames are more stable but can warp under impact or extreme heat. Hardware failure – a broken locking mechanism or a worn sash hinge – can also prevent the sash from closing fully, leaving a gap that no amount of weatherstripping can bridge. If the window looks slightly off-square in its frame, or if the latch no longer pulls the sash tight, hardware or frame distortion is the place to look.
What to Do Right Now
- Do a hand-sweep on a windy day. Close every window fully, then move your palm slowly around the sash perimeter, the corners, and the trim joint. Note exactly where you feel moving air – that location narrows the diagnosis before anyone arrives.
- Photograph the problem areas. A photo of fogged glass, cracked caulk, or a gap at the frame costs you nothing and gives your local Meridian Windows & Doors team a head start on the assessment.
- Check whether the sash closes and latches fully. Try locking each window. If the latch won’t engage or requires force, the sash is likely out of alignment – that is useful information for the technician.
- Avoid covering the window with plastic film or tape as a permanent fix. Temporary film kits can mask the problem and make it harder to assess the full extent of seal failure. If you use one for warmth this week, that is fine – just leave it accessible for the visit.
- Do not attempt to re-glaze or re-seal a fogged insulated glass unit yourself. Injecting sealant into a failed IGU does not restore the gas fill or the thermal rating, and it can make the unit harder to replace cleanly. This one genuinely requires a professional replacement of the glass unit.
How We Fix It
When your local Meridian Windows & Doors team arrives, the technician walks every window you flagged and does a full condition check: frame squareness, sash alignment, seal integrity, hardware function, and the caulk lines inside and out. That assessment tells us whether the fix is a weatherstripping replacement, a new insulated glass unit, or a full window replacement – and in some cases, all three on different units in the same house.
Before any work starts, you get a written price. That is not a rough range – it is the actual number for this job, on paper, with no adjustments at the door. That is how every Garrison job runs, no exceptions.
Most weatherstripping and caulk work on a standard window is done in a single visit. IGU replacements and full window replacements take longer, depending on the unit size and the product sourced from our portfolio – PGT, CGI, CWS, ES Windows, ECO Window Systems, Mr-Glass, Therma-Tru, and ViewLux are all in play, so we spec the right product for your opening rather than defaulting to whatever is sitting in a warehouse. Every installation is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, in writing, no fine print about labor exclusions.
Frequently Asked Questions
They can wait, but every month you wait is a month your heating or cooling system works harder than it should. A failed IGU seal or deteriorated weatherstripping does not self-correct – it typically gets worse as temperature swings continue to stress the frame and glass. If you want to stop paying the energy penalty, sooner is genuinely better than later. Call (817) 686-2228 to get a written estimate and decide with real numbers in front of you.
In most cases it is expensive rather than dangerous – the main risks are higher energy bills, possible moisture intrusion at the frame, and comfort problems in the rooms affected. That said, if moisture gets into a wood frame long enough, rot can compromise the structural integrity of the window opening, which becomes a more serious repair. There is no electrical, gas, or high-tension component in a standard window, so this is not an emergency the way a gas leak or a failed spring would be – but it is not something to let run for years either. Call (817) 686-2228 to schedule a look before minor seal failure becomes a framing repair.
Contact your local Meridian Windows & Doors team at (817) 686-2228 and a live person will pick up – any hour, any day of the year. They can tell you what the current scheduling window looks like in your area and get an assessment on the calendar. The assessment is free, and the written price comes before any work begins.
No. The written price you receive before work begins is the price – full stop. That is not a policy with exceptions; it is one of the five points of The Garrison Code that every Meridian job runs on. If the technician discovers additional scope during the job, we stop, explain what was found, and put any change in writing before we proceed. You will never open the door to a number that is different from what you agreed to.
